Straight teeth doesn’t have to mean two years of metal braces. Although we still love traditional braces for teeth straightening and jaw alignment, they’re not the perfect option for everyone. Some patients prefer Invisalign® for a more inconspicuous and shortened treatment time, in many cases.
Designed with sophisticated software and 3D digital models of your teeth, Invisalign® consists of a series of clear plastic trays made out of medical-grade plastic. The trays apply gradual pressure to your teeth to shift them into place very little discomfort. Every two weeks, you will switch to the next tray in the series until we achieve the desired results!
Every person — and every mouth — is different, so it’s important to think through your options and consider which orthodontic treatment best fits your lifestyle. To help you out, we’re going to share three questions you should ask yourself before deciding whether Invisalign® is right for you or your family member:
Question #1 – How committed are you to oral hygiene?
One of the most difficult things about braces is the hygiene involved. For kids and teenagers (and some adults), properly brushing and flossing several times a day between all the wires and brackets is difficult. Do you have the patience to take care of your teeth while you’re wearing braces?
If the answer is an honest “no” then Invisalign® may be a better option for you. With Invisalign® you can eat or drink whatever you want, and you can just remove the trays when it’s time to brush and floss. No need to worry about which foods are “prohibited” and taking care of your teeth is just as easy as it always was.
Question #2 – Will you really wear your trays?
You know yourself best. Can you commit to wearing your aligner trays consistently? In order for this treatment option to be successful, you need to wear your trays at least 22 hours per day. We see people get too excited about the fact that they can take them out, and they end up taking them out way too much. Really, you should only be removing them to eat and brush (and floss), then they need to go right back in.
Invisalign® is awesome, but the truth is, you’re going to get annoyed by the trays at times. Adults and responsible teens typically have no problem following these guidelines, but you want to be honest with yourself and decide if you can commit to wearing the trays as much as you possibly can.
Question #3 – Are you looking for fast results?
Generally, Invisalign® usually takes 8-18 months versus 24 months for traditional braces. Invisalign® also requires fewer checkups, which saves you money and effort — we know how hard it can be to come in for routine appointments if you have a busy schedule!
If you’re looking for faster results with fewer appointments, we’d definitely recommend that you consider this option. Though you may pay a little bit more than you would for traditional braces, the fact that you have to come in less means fewer days off work and fewer co-pays. It might end up being around the same once it’s all said and done.
Aligner treatments like Invisalign® are effective in 90% of straightening cases. Some smiles that require more intensive straightening may not be a good match for Invisalign®, but we can always discuss that with you and give you our recommendations.
